PAC-LAB is a conceptual interior design proposal created for the company “Private MD Labs”, aiming to highlight the importance of regular health checkups as a part of preventive well-being. The idea introduces compact, modern laboratory centers placed in high-profile locations such as Silicon Valley and Beverly Hills, USA. The space is organized to clearly divide staff and client areas, ensuring that employees can move efficiently and with minimal visibility. The centre includes a reception, waiting lounge, cafe corner, relaxation area, offices, restrooms, staff facilities, changing rooms, and storage zones.
The concept is based on the classic video game “PAC-MAN”. This game works similarly to how blood cells work in our bodies- it consists of a labyrinth that the character has to navigate through and catch circles while avoiding four ghosts and each have different characteristics and purposes. The main character gains energy and speed by eating fruit that are also placed randomly in the labyrinth.
This game made us draw parallels with our own blood circulatory system. The labyrinth is our blood vessels, the main character is our blood cells that are being attacked by the ghosts or viruses, but by eating the fruit we can beat the ghosts and keep ourselves healthy.
With our design we tried to evoke the feeling of being inside of one of the levels of the video game but by choosing lighter and more muted colours we aimed to make the space more calming and airy. We achieved this desired feeling by incorporating straight lines and symmetry in the overall layout and design with accents of round elements throughout the space to replicate the contrast between straight clean lines and round shapes that the game has. The colour palette also represents the colours in the game, but in much lighter shades.
